The Vatican and 97 per cent of climate scientists accept that mankind is ruining the world but Prime Minister Tony Abbott seems to have difficulty in accepting the evidence.
In fact our new PM bared his soul and declared himself to be a complete atheist when it came to believing in climate change in 2009.
The Australian of December 12 2009 quoted him as saying: “The argument [behind climate change] is absolute crap. However, the politics of this are tough for us. Eighty per cent of people believe climate change is a real and present danger.”
He should have added that it was not only 80 per cent of the people but that NASA records the fact that: “Ninety-seven per cent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities, and most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position.”
Malcolm Turnbull said in his blog on December 7 2009: “The fact is that Tony and the people who put him in his job do not want to do anything about climate change.”
So what signal has PM Abbott sent on his first day in office?
He has scrapped the Climate Commission.
This decision has nothing to do with his promise to do away with carbon pricing.
The Climate Commission’s job is to provide us, the people, with the unpolluted facts about climate
change.
Mr Abbott has acted immediately to prevent independently verified information about climate change being disseminated to us.
Why does an image of burning books occur to me?
Prof Tin Flannery, the commission’s chief climate commissioner, said today: “…we have developed a reputation as a reliable, apolitical source of facts on all aspects on climate change.
"I believe Australians have a right to know, a right to authoritative, independent and accurate information on climate change.
"We have just seen one of the earliest ever starts to the bushfire season in Sydney following the hottest 12 months on record. Last summer was the hottest on record, breaking over 120 heat records across Australia.
"As global action on climate change deepens, propaganda aimed at misinforming the public about climate change, and so blunting any action, increases."
Let’s not forget that it was Mr Abbott’s opposition to Malcolm Turnbull’s positive actions on climate change that led him to challenge for the Liberal Party leadership.
Mr Abbott won by just one vote.
Mr Turnbull said on December 9 2009 of the Liberals who voted for Mr Abbott: “They do not believe in human caused global warming. As Tony observed on one occasion "climate change is crap" or if you consider his mentor, Senator Minchin, the world is not warming, it’s cooling and the climate change issue is part of a vast left wing conspiracy to deindustrialise the
world.
Now politics is about conviction and a commitment to carry out those convictions. The Liberal Party is currently led by people whose conviction on climate change is that it is "crap" and you don't need to do anything about it. Any policy that is announced will simply be a con, an
environmental figleaf to cover a determination to do nothing.
“After all, as Nick Minchin observed, in his view the majority of the Party Room do not believe in human caused global warming at all. I disagree with that assessment, but many people in the community will be excused for thinking the leadership ballot proved him right.”
Mr Turnbull said of Mr Abbott: “His only redeeming virtue in this remarkable lack of conviction is that every time he announced a new position to me he would preface it with "Mate, mate, I know I am a bit of a weather vane on this, but....."
He finished his assessment of Mr Abbott’s stance: “…we are now without integrity. We have given our opponents the irrefutable, undeniable evidence that we cannot be trusted.”
For the benefit of Mr Abbott and his doubting colleagues, here is NASA’s list of 200 worldwide scientific organisations which believe that climate change has been caused by human action:

Two final thoughts.
In July 2007, the Vatican City announced a plan to become the first carbon-neutral state in the world.
In 2011 the Pontifical Academy of Sciences determined: "We call on all people and nations to recognise the serious and potentially irreversible impacts of global warming caused by the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, and by changes in forests, wetlands, grasslands, and other land uses. We appeal to all nations to develop and implement, without delay, effective and fair policies to reduce the causes and impacts of climate change on communities and ecosystems.”
